Collisions between vessels and bridges can be enormously costly environmentally, economically, and socially. Prudence dictates that bridge owners and operators mark their structures in the best and most practicable manner.
Navigational lights and other marine signals are required on bridges over the navigable waters of the United States. The sole purpose of these signals is to prevent vessel-bridge collisions. Detailed requirements and procedures are set forth in the Code of Federal Regulations (33 CFR 118).
The number, position, color and visibility arcs of navigational lights on bridges are carefully detailed in regulations. These define for the mariner the type, navigation status, and physical boundaries of a particular bridge passage. The required light intensity is dependent on two local parameters: the weather pattern (meteorological visibility anticipated 90% of the nights of the year) and background lighting conditions (generally categorized as "minor" or "considerable").
Outside of US territories, PMAP refers to IALA recommendations for the marking of bridges over navigable waters.
